Week 1: Leading change for good

Leading change for good

Simple things that make us feel good and are most important to us

My reflections

  • Connect – I get energy from connection with other people, at home and at work. In some situations, I’m the social connector, in others I stay on the periphery. I’m immersed in people connection at work; maybe that influences my choice to opt in or out?
  • Give – quality time is one of my love languages, I regard time as a gift to give or receive. I’m aware I don’t give enough time to my community; I’m more focused on people I know well.
  • Learn – I’m motivated by learning, by challenge. It’s a big part of why I’m doing this programme.
  • Taking notice – I’ve become aware over the last couple of years how easy it is not to be present – when my kids are talking to me for example. When I’m feeling stressed or anxious, I use breathing (e.g. mindful minute) and simple mindfulness (e.g. five sounds) exercises to bring me keep me in the moment.
  • Be active – I walk most days with a friend, gaining connection and being active at the same time. I also practice Pilates, to manage a long-running injury and keep me feeling strong.

I would describe my own personal values as wisdom (good judgement); compassion; authenticity; integrity; courage.

At LNZ I learned that my physical body is as much as part of my leadership as head and my heart. Reflecting on Dr Pink, I wonder if I've missed other values that are important to me – being purposeful about my own wellbeing and giving to others?
